Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz says he has concerns about the Hennepin County Attorney’s handling of the murder case against a state trooper who fatally shot a man during a 2023 traffic stop.

The big picture: A legal dispute between county attorney Mary Moriarty and trooper Ryan Londregan’s defense over a use-of-force expert sparked criticism from law enforcement and calls from Republicans for her to resign.

  • On Friday, the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association sent the governor a letter asking him to use his legal authority to direct the attorney general’s office to take over the prosecution.

Catch up fast: Moriarty announced in January that his office was charging Londregan with second-degree unintentional murder for shooting and killing Ricky Cobb II last July.

  • It marked Moriarty’s first prosecution of a high-profile shooting by law enforcement since winning election in 2022 on a platform that included holding police accountable for misconduct.

The latest: Critics of the case concerns raised after Londregan’s defense attorney claimed in a court filing last week that Moriarty’s charges went against his own use-of-force expert’s opinion that the

Lawsuit to allege 2 Calgary teachers ‘working together’ to sexually abuse students

A former Calgary teacher accused of sexually assaulting junior high school students had help from a guidance counselor — who has already been accused of sexually assaulting children — with the two “providing covers” for each other, lawyers allege on the eve of a lawsuit being filed against the two men and the Calgary Board of Education.

Michael Gregory died by suicide in 2021, five days after he was criminally charged with 17 counts of sexual assault and sexual exploitation involving six girls. They had been students at John Ware Junior High, where Gregory taught between 1986 to 2006.

A $40-million lawsuit was filed in 2021 against the CBE and Gregory’s estate. There are 16 alleged victims named as plaintiffs.

This lawsuit seeks damages for the sexual and emotional abuse suffered by the victims. It alleged junior high staff — including a vice-principal — were well aware of his abusive behavior.

‘A bad faith decision’

Last year, a new law firm, HMC Lawyers LLP, took over the 2021 case. At a press conference Monday, lawyer David Corrigan said the CBE abruptly “pulled the pin” on mediation just days before it was set to begin on March 12.

Trump legal team blasts ‘unconstitutional’ attempts to force property sale as deadline for $464M fine nears

Lawyers for former President Trump are blasting New York Attorney General Letitia James’ “unconstitutional” attempt to block the GOP presumptive nominee’s appeal and force a property sale as the deadline for him to post hundreds of millions of dollars of bonds in the case looms.

Trump and his legal team have appealed and requested a stay on his $464 million civil fraud judgment. On Monday, his lawyers said that “ongoing diligent efforts have proven that a bond in the judgment’s full amount is a ‘practical impossibility,'” amid attempts to approach about 30 surety companies.

NY AG ASKS COURT TO IGNORE TRUMP CLAIM THAT POSTING $464M BOND IS ‘PRACTICAL IMPOSSIBILITY’

The lawyers said the “enormous magnitude” of the bond requirement, which effectively requires cash reserves approaching $1 billion, is “unprecedented for a private company.”

James has pushed back, calling Trump’s request for a stay “extraordinary” and “improper.” James has said that Trump should be able to secure the entire value via multiple sureties or offers his real estate holdings as collateral.

But Trump attorney Clifford S. Robert on Thursday sent a letter to the Appellate Division of New York’s Supreme Court, arguing James’ efforts were “unconstitutional.”

“It would be completely illogical

Lawyers for Gaza victims file case at International Criminal Court | Israel War on Gaza News

Lawyers say Israel’s acts against Palestinians in Gaza amount to genocide, call on West to refrain from abetting crimes.

A group of lawyers representing Palestinian victims of Israeli attacks on Gaza have filed a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC), arguing that Israel’s actions amount to the crime of genocide.

Gilles Devers, a veteran French lawyer and the victims’ representative before the ICC, submitted the complaint to the prosecutor as part of a four-person delegation in the Dutch city of The Hague on Monday.

The civil society initiative could result in arrest warrants being issued against top Israeli politicians, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

“It is clear to me that there are all the criteria for the crime of genocide,” Devers told Al Jazeera, adding that cases such as ex-Yugoslavia and Rwanda set the precedent against which the complaint had been submitted.

“So this is not my opinion, it’s the reality of the law.”

Attorney Ashleigh Merchant said she was surprised Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis took the stand during the proceedings over whether she should be disqualified from former President Trump’s Georgia election interference case and said the DA had no evidence to back up her defense.

Merchant told “Fox & Friends” on Wednesday Wills didn’t bring anything to support her claims when she testified.

“What surprised me was that she didn’t bring anything to actually back it up,” she said. “So if someone had accused me of wrongdoing, I’m going to bring my phone. I’m going to bring my text messages. I’m going to bring my bank records. So that surprised me that she didn’t bring any actual proof. We just were stuck with her word that she

Nathan Wade Resigns From Trump Case After Judge’s Ruling

In a surprise move on Wednesday, a judge in Atlanta quashed six of the charges against former President Donald J. Trump and his allies in the sprawling Georgia election interference case, including one related to a call that Mr. Trump made to pressure Georgia’s secretary of state in early January 2021.

The judge, Scott McAfee of Fulton Superior Court, left intact the rest of the racketeering indictment, which initially included 41 counts against 19 co-defendants. Four of them have pleaded guilty since the indictment was handed up by a grand jury in August.

While the ruling was certainly a setback for prosecutors, several legal observers said on Wednesday that it did not weaken the core of the case, the state racketeering charge that was brought against all of the defendants.

That charge is based on “overt acts” that the indictment says various defendants took in furtherance of the racketeering conspiracy. The judge was explicit in stating that Wednesday’s order does not apply to those acts.

The ruling was not related to a defense effort to disqualify Fani T. Willis, the district attorney of Fulton County, Ga., who is leading the case. A ruling on that matter, which has made headlines

Despite Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula claiming no knowledge of her expected arrest on corruption and money laundering charges involving roughly R4 million, her lawyer Stephen May said his client would hand himself over to the police.

Mapisa-Nqakula said she knew nothing about her arrest while announcing “special leave” from her position as speaker of the National Assembly in a statement on Thursday night.

However, her attorney Stephen May told the Mail & Guardian earlier that the former speaker would hand herself over to the police “in due course”, but was also aware that the state had a “flimsy” case against her.

“My lawyers have, however, proactively informed the National Prosecution Authority of my readiness to comply and cooperate should the need arise.”

Mapisa-Nqakula

“There is certainly no desire to avoid a truth-finding process. We do have grave concerns about the timing at which this [arrest] comes and are very concerned about the nature and strength of the case of the state,” May said on Thursday.

“It would certainly appear that [the state’s case] is flimsy at best, and now what it seems or looks like might be an

Boeing whistleblower’s case could go on posthumously, attorney says

A whistleblower and former Boeing inspector who died from an apparent suicide just months before his yearslong case was coming to a head could have had his matter heard posthumously, a legal expert said.

John Barnett, 62, of Louisiana, was found dead Saturday in the parking lot of a Charleston, South Carolina, Holiday Inn “from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” a county coroner said.

Barnett was in town to give deposition testimony in his federal legal action against Boeing, with his case, which dates back to 2017, set to finally come before an administrative law judge this summer, according to his legal team.

Barnett’s death should not end the claim, as his estate could be substituted in as the complainant, Washington, D.C., whistleblower attorney Stephen Kohn said.

“He won’t be able to get reinstatement, but the estate should be able to get compensatory damages for the stress that he suffered and back retirement,” Kohn said.

Alina Habba responds to claims Trump is seeking foreign legal funding

Former President Trump’s attorney Alina Habba responded to claims that he could be seeking foreign sources to pay his massive legal fees, but she said Wednesday she “can’t speak” about the strategy.

Rumors about the future of Trump’s businesses are circulating as he attempts to pay the $454 million due in his New York civil fraud case just days before the deadline. Trump critics question whether the former president might secure the funds from an outside source, such as Saudi Arabia or Russia.

“Well, there’s rules and regulations that are public. I can’t talk about strategy; that requires certain things, and we have to follow those rules,” Habba told Fox News’s Martha MacCallum on Wednesday.

“Like I said, this is manifest injustice. It’s impossible. It is an impossibility. I believe they knew that,” she continued, referring to the bond amount.

Trump’s legal team indicated in court Monday that it would be “impossible” for them to secure the money he owes. His attorney said they spent “countless hours” negotiating with “one of the largest insurance companies in the world” and close to 30 companies to secure a full bond for the case.

Does Rose Hanbury Have a Case Over Stephen Colbert’s William Joke?

Rose Hanbury served talk show host Stephen Colbert with a legal notice over his joke about the rumors he had an affair with Prince William and could take further action to squash it.

“If you really go back and listen to what Stephen Colbert said, he was really just saying there are rumors and people are speculating no different than you and I are here,” attorney Neama Rahmaniwho is not affiliated with the case and doesn’t represent either party, exclusively told Us Weekly on Wednesday, March 20. “We’re just reporting what other people are speculating. We’re not saying that it’s absolutely true that Rose had an affair with William or putting out a definitive statement because of the nuanced nature of what Colbert said.”

According to Rahmani, Colbert, 59, didn’t state the rumors as fact, which wouldn’t make a “good defamation case” for Hanbury.

During a March episode of his Late Night With Stephen Colbert talk show, Colbert joked about the rumors that Hanbury, 40, had an affair with William, 41, while discussing the conspiracy theories surrounding Princess Kate Middleton. According to In TouchHanbury then served Colbert with a notice asking Late Night and other news organizations
